GoAnimate is a cloud-based platform for creating and distributing animated videos. It allows users to develop both narrative videos, in which characters speak with lip-sync and move around, and video presentations, in which a voiceover narrator speaks over images and props, which may also move around. The service is provided on a freemium basis and has multiple subscription levels. GoAnimate provides users with drag-and-drop tools that can be used to access character models, backdrops and other assets to create scenario-based. The platform offers text-to-speech character voices with customizable environments. (Adapted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GoAnimate
In the classroom it can be used for the following:
– students can create short simple dialogue clips
– teachers can create model speaking exams
– teachers can create listening comprehension exercises
– students can write dialogues as pre-writing activities where the animations
– discuss topics such as advantages and disadvantages
After students have created their own animations they can listen and check for spelling and punctuation errors in the text they have written whilst the charcaters speak. This helps to encourage the students to edit their writing in an egaging way and memorable way.
The downside is that GoAnimate is not iPad compatible.
