Math and the Flowers
Jen Dela TorreMath is all around us, and we use it every day. Exploring math helps students appreciate and understand that math is fun and important and consequently develop skills that will help them succeed in school and beyond. Students should see that math is everywhere. It’s in nature. It’s in the flowers.
During FWC Foundation 3 students’ trip to Dubai Miracle Garden, students were asked to capture math in anything and everything that they can see during the trip. They were probed to caption the picture with a problem or question involving the use of any mathematical concepts. They could also annotate the picture with required information or labels. To further enhance their entries , they assigned titles each one a title.
To submit, they were asked to upload their entries on Instagram using #DMGtrip or #mathandtheflowers. Though most of them preferred to submit them through email. Students were also asked to present their entries in class and challenge their classmates to answer or solve the problem.
Here are some of the students’ entries:
It has been easy for my students to capture the pictures. The challenge was in the formulation of the mathematical problems related to their photos. As their teacher, I had to guide them at this stage. I was delighted to see my students as they embraced the challenge and find joy and pride on their work. On top of this, I believe they appreciated math during the trip. As one my students exclaimed: “Eureka! I found Math in the flowers!”
