Abstract (or summary) – ملخص A summary of the contents of a book, article or speech.

Acknowledge – الاشارة الى المؤلف في الاستشهادات المرجعية للبحث To express recognition of the words or ideas of another author by citing them in your work.

Almanac – الكتاب السنوي An annual calendar containing important dates and statistical information

Appendix – ملحقAdditional material at the end of a book, article or document.

Application – تطبيقات App is an abbreviation for application, typically a small, specialized program downloaded onto mobile devices.

Article – مقاله A (brief) essay or research report on a subject. Articles can appear in magazines, journals, newspapers, full text online databases, or other sources such as encyclopedias.

Article database –قاعدة بيانات للمقالات  A searchable collection of electronic articles that were either originally published in other sources such as magazines, journals and newspapers, or created digitally for online journals. Some article databases only give citations, but most are full-text.

Article Citation – اشتشهادات مرجعية للمقالة An article reference gives the information needed to find a full-text copy. It identifies the author and title and tells where and when it was published.

Atlas أطلس – A book of maps.

Audience – حضور او جمهور Listeners, readers or viewers.

Authorكاتب/مؤلف The person who wrote the book or article.

Authorityمصدر استنادي A reliable source of information, advice etc.

Availableمتوفر In the library catalogue this means the book is on the shelf.

Bibliographical Information معلومات بيليوغرافيه Information containing a description of a book or library resource. See also “Record”.

Bibliography قائمة ببليوغرافية بالمراجع A list of the resources used to research a topic.

Bookmark (as a verb) – قائمة المواقع المفضلة To mark/record a site on the Internet so you can return to it easily.

Boolean (or Boolean logic)المنطق البوليني (نسبة الى جورج بول) A system of logic devised by mathematician George Boole (1815-1864). Boole’s system is a way to define sets for search strings to perform advanced searching.

Boolean operatorعامل بوليان الحسابي للعمليات المنطقية Boolean Operators define the relationship between words in a search string. The principal Boolean operators are: AND (both words must appear in the results) OR (either one word or the other must appear in the results) and NOT (the appearance of the second word with the first excludes the source from the results)

Borrow يستعير To check out a resource from the library for a limited time using your ID card.

Browserالمتصفح The software interface that allows you to view files on the Internet, e.g. Google Chrome; Safari; and Firefox.

Call number – رقم التصنيف A code of letters and numbers given to a resource to help you find it on the shelf. For example: PE1114.I6 G6844 2015

Catalog (catalogue or library catalog) – فهرس المكتبة A list of all the resources in a library.

Chapter فصل من الكتاب The dividing units/sections of a book.

Circulation Desk/Help Desk/Service Desk/ – مكتب الإستعلامات The place where you take a resource when you want to borrow or return it. You can also ask for information here.

Citationالاستشهادات المرجعية A method of recording the information about an information resource used in your research (which could be a book, website, journal article, etc.).

Citation style – أسلوب الاقتباسA format for the layout of your citations. The HCT preferred style is APA, though there are many other styles, for example IEEE.

Classification System – نظام تصنيف المكتبة The coding system used by libraries to organize their resources.

Course Reserveمصادر معلومات لدعم مقرر دراسي Materials selected by an instructor to support class research and study. When course support materials are made available on the Web, it is called electronic reserve.

Database –قاعدة البيانات A searchable collection of electronic information, for example journal articles.

Database title – عنوان قاعدة البيانات The name of a database used to find journal articles or other information. Academic Search Elite is the title of a database within the EBSCOhost group.

Database vendor –بائع قاعدة البيانات the name of a company or organization which provides information databases for a fee, for example EBSCOhost and ProQuest are database vendors.

Dictionaryقاموس A book containing a selection of the words of a language, usually arranged alphabetically, giving information about their meanings and pronunciations.

Directory – دليل A book that lists names, phone numbers and addresses of people and businesses.

Due date – تاريخ ا لارجاع The date that you must return your library resources on or by.

Encyclopedia – موسوعة A book or online resource with general information about various subjects. For example: Britannica Online

Electronic journal – مجلة الكترونية An electronic publication that either mirrors a printed journal, or is created online, with full-text articles.

Fiction – قصص A story created from the imagination.

Full text – نص كامل The complete text of an article or book.

Glossary – مسرد او كشاف بالمصطلحات المستخدمة في الكتاب A list of difficult or specialist words used.  It is sometimes found at the back of a book.

Graded Readers – كتب لتعليم مهارات اللغة الانجليزية لكافة المستويات Books with specific English levels to help you improve your English skills.

Help Desk/Service Desk/Circulation Desk – مكتب الاستقبال The place where you take a resource when you want to borrow or return it. You can also ask for information here.

Hold – يحجز When you place a hold on a book it means that you reserve it so you can borrow the book when it is next available.

Home page/Homepage – الصفحه الرئيسيه The first page of a website on the Internet.

Hyperlink – وصلة احالة او رابط على موقع الانترنت A method for moving between webpages by clicking on highlighted words or images. See also “Link”. 

ILC – مركز التعلم الذاتي Independent Learning Centre

Illustration – رسوم توضيحية A picture found in a book or magazine.

Independent Learning – التعلم الذاتي /المستقل Studying or working at your own speed and time without the help of a teacher.

Index – كشاف An alphabetical list of the subjects in a book with page numbers showing where they are listed.  It is usually found at the back of the book.

In-text (or in the body of your text) citations هوامش As you are writing your paper, you need to record where you found that piece of information, and you do this within your sentence, using a preferred citation style, for example APA.

Inter-library loan – خدمة تبادل الاعارة الداخلية بين المكتبات A library service that allows you to borrow a resource from another library when it is not available locally.

Internet – الانترنت The global computer information network that allows you to access the web.

Journal – مجله A publication that is published regularly, and contains scholarly articles written either by professors, researchers, or experts on a subject. An abstract and a bibliography are usually included as part of each journal article.

Keyword (or search term) – كلمة مفتاحية A general word that describes the subject that you want to research.

Library of Congress Classification System – نظام تصنيف مكتبة الكونغرس A popular system for generating call numbers. This system is used by HCT Libraries.

Library – مكتبةA place to find information and resources on many subjects.

Licensed databases –قواعد البيانات المرخصه A library may purchase access to a database through a licensing agreement.

Link – رابط A word or image in a web page which, when clicked, takes you to another page or to another website.  See also “Hyperlink”.

LIWA – موقع ليوا An agreement which allows you to borrow resources from HCT, UAEU and Zayed University.

Magazine –  مجلة A non-academic resource published at regular intervals.

Multimedia –الوسائط المتعدده Combination of text, graphics, video and/or sound.

Non-fiction – كتب غير قصصية A book that contains factual information.

On-loan/ Not available – غير متوفر/ مُعار In the catalogue this means that the resource has been borrowed by another person.

Overdue – متأخر A book is overdue when you do not return it on or before the due date.

Quotation اقتباس Including the exact words you have taken from an information resource by using quotation marks (“”). (Remember to indicate where the quote came from)

Paraphrasing اعادة الصياغة putting the words of another author into your own words within your paper. You do not need quotation marks, but do still need to record where you found that information (as an in-text citation).

Peer-reviewed – مراجعة مقالة من قبل اهل الاختصاص Within peer reviewed journals, articles are evaluated by subject experts before they are accepted for publication.

Periodical – دورية A publication that comes out at regular intervals, such as daily, weekly or monthly.  Examples of periodicals are newspapers, magazines and journals. 

Popular press – الصحافه الشعبيه Newspapers, magazines and television shows intended for general consumer.

Phrase searching – عبارة البحث Search using more than one word in a specific order, for example “Higher Colleges of Technology”.

Plagiarism – انتحال آراء مؤلف او كتاباته The deliberate act of taking the words, ideas, data, or images of someone else, without acknowledging the author/ originator, and presenting them as one’s own.

Primary source –مصدر اولي A source created by someone with first-hand knowledge.

Published – طباعة و نشر الكتاب To issue material for sale or distribution to the public, for example books, DVDs and websites.

Publisher – دار النشر و الطباعة The person or company whose business is the publishing of books, periodicals, computer software, etc.

Record – سجل A bibliographical listing in a database or catalogue. See also “Bibliographical Information”.

Referenceمرجع the full record of the information source you have used in your paper. The reference will be in your bibliography or reference list, while the in-text citation is only a brief note within your sentence to let readers know which resource to look at.

Reference serviceالخدمه المرجعيه A library service that offers research help in person, by phone, and online.

Renew – تجديد To extend the loan of a book or other library resource.

Research – بحث To find information.

Resource – مصدر المعلومات A library material such as a book, DVD, magazine, encyclopedia, etc. that has information.

Service Desk/ Help Desk/Circulation Desk – مكتب الإستعلامات The place where you take a resource when you want to borrow or return it. You can also ask for information here.

Scholarly journal المجله العلميه A periodical that publishes research papers of interest to researchers. Most articles in a scholarly journal are written by college and university faculty.

Search engine – محرك بحث A search program for the Internet that finds websites when users input keywords.  Popular search engine include Google and Bing.

Search string (or statement)سلسلة البحث A search string is two or more keywords.

Secondary sourceمصدر ثانوي Writing based on information found in other published sources.

Self-access resources – مصادر مستخدمة في التعلم الذاتي Study materials you use when you want to practice on your own.

Special collectionمجموعه خاصه A collection of materials that are old, rare, important for local interest or that support a very specific field of research.

Subject – موضوع الكتاب The topic of a book or article. 

Subject headingرؤوس الموضوعات A term which describes the subject of a source.

Synonymsمرادفات Different words with the same meaning.

Tag –علامة البحث للمعلومات   A label assigned to help you identify data.

Thesaurus مكنز A dictionary of synonyms and antonyms.

Title – عنوان The name a resource.

Truncationقطع A symbol that substitutes for letters at the end of words in a search statement. For example creat* will search for creature, creation, create, creating, creator, creaturely, etc.

Uniform Resource Locator (URL)عنوان صفحة موقع الانترنت URLs are the addresses used to access Internet resources, for example www.google.com

Wildcardحرف أو اشارة بدل A symbol that stands for one or more unspecified characters. For example: wh* finds what, white, and why.

World Wide Web (WWW) – موقع الإنترنت A section of the Internet where documents are linked to each other by hyperlinks. See also “Hyperlink”.
