Confessions of a slacker
Shifa DesaiI prep and I plan and I go, go, go!
I teach and I talk and say no, no, no!
It’s vocab
Then grammar
And adverbs of manner
It’s iPads and apps ….
And students taking naps!
It’s an open plan work space
And we all have our place
There’s far too much noise!
It gets on my case!
There’s gossip, and chatter
And small things that don’t matter
It’s crazy and annoying
My blood is boiling!
My fellow teachers, I am a slacker. I slack off regularly and often!
I sit at my desk, I chill and I soften.
I take a mini mind-break.
I could reach for the cheesecake.
But what good would that do
When you’re already stressed and blue?
“Pause,” says leadership coach, Anakha Coman. Stop. Breathe. Do nothing else. Three minutes is all that’s needed. Mindfulness has found its way into the corporate environment under the auspices of Coman’s Awake at Work program. Her institute offers companies the benefits of her program which is designed to access sources of creativity, insight and collaboration for all employees.
With Happiness featuring strongly on the local agenda, I am inspired to take ownership of how I create, communicate and collaborate during 40 hours a week…
to teach, to persuade
It’s hard work, you know
We don’t have it made!
….and that’s why micropractice can help you improve your corner of the world, your workspace in a busy faculty area, your contact time with students. And especially on those days when,
the fullstop, the comma
Six hours I teach… And students come back at you…
“English is so boring, Miss!
We watch Turkish drama?”
Some of these micropractices are available on Coman’s blog (www.awakeatworktraining.com). We might still have
no fortune, but some talent in this job that we do
Teaching the youth of today
To their purpose
be true.
So here’s my advice if you’re a teacher like me
Breathe in, breathe out and you will see
You’ll be stronger for longer
A champion you will be.
