Memrise: An App for learning vocabulary

Memrise: An App for learning vocabulary

May 24, 2017

We all love Quizlet, but sometimes we just need a change. I found this free app on GooglePlay called Memrise.  I used it with my students in Cycle 4.  They downloaded the app on their phones and I assigned ‘courses’ for them to practice.  Some of the courses I have used is Irregular verbs in English, 504 absolutely essential words, English visual dictionary etc. The students absolutely loved the learning-on-the-go element.  There is also an offline mode available. This app was nominated for Best App in Google Play Awards for 2017 and I can see why.

Memrise uses audio, images, and memory techniques to help you associate words with one another for easier recall, as well as regular tests to ensure you’re remembering the concepts. Students don’t just read through the words and their translations, but Memrise creates an association between the translation and words you are already familiar with. There are different ways Memrise tests you. For example, you may get a question/answer problem to solve and then a multiple choice question later on, though they both are testing you on the same concept. I think it is visually appealing and the students enjoyed using it. Go ahead, and check it out at https://www.memrise.com/courses/english/english/
