Faculty sporting achievements inspire students to join in

June 9, 2015

Students from Sharjah Colleges have been inspired to take part in various sporting events by their teachers’ dedication and determination towards sport, health and fitness. They have followed their teachers’ sporting success throughout the year and some even turned up bright and early in the morning to support and cheer them on in the various events.

Alya Ahmed commented “I was so inspired by my Foundation teacher’s success and the encouragement from the staff at the sports center that it motivated me to take part in the HCT Sprint Triathlon and the Director’s Trophy Championships.”

Alyson GM + 2Three faculty members from Sharjah Women`s College have been competing throughout the academic year in either long distance swimming or triathlon events and have gained top awards for their achievement.

In October 2014, Alyson Gibbons-Menzies and John Raven took part in the first series of the 2XU Dubai Triathlon championships. Alyson came home in 1st place in her category after swimming 700m, cycling 26km and running 5km.

Alyson GMAlyson then competed in the second and third series of the 2XU Triathlon in February and March 2015 and through her consistency achieved 1st place overall in the whole Championship.

In November 2014, concurrently with the triathlon championships, Phil Haydon and Alyson Gibbons-Menzies took part in the annual Mina Mile Series 1 championship and both achieved 2nd place within their age group category. Alyson then went on to swim in series 2 of the Mina Mile in March 2015 and once again gained top podium position and secured first place overall in the championship.

It is achievements such as these and the enormous encouragement and support that students and staff receive from the sports center personnel that makes Sharjah Colleges students so successful in HCT sporting activities. This was clearly seen by the number of students, male and female, taking part in the Sharjah Colleges Sprint Triathlon in April and the various Inter-College sporting events that have taken place this year.
