Logos: How Well Do You Remember Them?

May 9, 2015

Although we see new logos every day, there are a few logos that we see on a daily basis, and assume that we know them by heart… But, do we?

Try it!

Don’t look anywhere else, and grab a pen and paper. Try to draw Apple’s logo. Did you get it right?

Don’t worry if you didn’t. A study was done a few months ago, and people were asked to draw Apple’s logo, and most of them were Apple users. These were their attempts:

The study explains:

Instead, the scientists say the students’ forgetfulness may be down to “a form of attentional saturation,” which can lead to “inattentional amnesia”  — the logo’s simplicity and ubiquity mean that people stop noticing the details because their brain tells them they don’t need to. “Under intentional learning conditions,” the study says, “people could memorize and reproduce the logo,” but without the need to do so, we simply acknowledge its existence. Our brains, used to seeing the image everywhere, use an “efficient and adaptive memory system” to avoid storing the unnecessary information.

Another try?

Okay. Let’s go local. Don’t scroll, don’t look ANYWHERE. Try HCT’s logo. Terrible right? It’s okay… I only got the colors right the first time I did it!

And, my students were worse! After closing their iPads, I asked them to draw HCT’s logo on the board as we were discussing the difference between logo and slogan last week…. I wish I took pictures! It was hilarious until one of the ladies caught the logo on an announcement somewhere in class and got it right, almost.

Class Activities

These are a few activities that can be used as speaking activities and as a way to give students a chance to breathe before they go back to their main lesson (:

You can challenge your students’ memory and ask them to draw logos they interact with every day. You can ask them to draw: HCT’s logo, BlackBerry, McDonald’s, Twitter, YouTube, WhatsApp, Skype, BBM, Snapchat, Instagram, ….

You can also show them these famous logos and ask them to find “the hidden message” in them. Maybe show them one first, and then let them try the rest. Take it further and let them find hidden messages in local logos. Maybe ask them to Instagram the logos with an explanation?

You can also get a few famous logos and hide parts of them. Ask students to draw the hidden parts. Or you can just hide the name and ask them to guess what it’s used for, like this online game.

Maybe just like Expo 2020 did, and ask them to create a logo for their class, for their project, for something they’re involved in. Not only should the logo be creative and colorful, but they should also explain their logo.
