The Fujairah Women’s College Foundations Level 3 students and faculty recently left the beauty of the Eastern Region’s rugged landscapes for a day, and traveled to the colorful Miracle Garden in Dubai (www.dubaimiraclegarden.com) to explore a different kind of beauty. This trip to DMG added an experiential dimension to the normal class reading and listening activities, which were focusing on color and the significance of colors in different cultures. One student, for example, noted that she was passing ‘royalty’ while she walked by a bed of lavender flowers.

To prepare for the trip, Level 3 Foundations faculty created English and math activities to aid their students in exploring DMG. These activities were preloaded on to the students’ I-Pads, which allowed them to fully enjoy what the Garden had to offer. All of the students were photographing flowers, hearts, cars, and houses as part of their on-site tasks, which were later transformed into Keynote presentations, or I-Books. In order to ‘find the math in nature,’ students had the fun and challenging task of capturing mathematical concepts in photos to later present as problems, such as calculating the number of flowers in a given area or structure.

Among the favorite exhibits were colorful peacocks with blossoming tails and a village of flower houses representing different structures from around the world while another student preferred close-up studies of individual flowers, an uncommon sight in Mirbah where she lives. Miracle Garden also had shaded snack areas that gave students an opportunity to cool off while chatting with their new teachers. All in all, Miracle Gardens Dubai was an aesthetic journey for the students in Level 3 at FWC, enabling them to experience what they had read about in class. We would recommend Dubai Miracle Garden to any class that would like to spend an enjoyable day out in nature.
