An update on Foundations Math course delivery in 201410

December 17, 2014

The pedagogy of Foundations Math has changed enormously with the aleks-screengrabintroduction of ALEKS as the key resource for teaching and learning. Foundations Math has made a major leap forward in mobile learning. Teaching, facilitation and independent learning has to be balanced effectively in this comparatively new environment. This has been a huge learning curve for faculty and our team of 43 teachers has risen to the challenges involved effectively.

Since the introduction of ALEKS in 201310 across HCT system, the strategies for teaching, learning and assessment of Foundations Math courses are being refined on evidence based outcomes of each strategic implementation.

The strategic introduction of a new ALEKS final exam tool turned out to be effective in terms of confirming the knowledge and mastery of learning objectives before approving the early exits. The testimonials and experiences of students who exited early will be shared in this blog. On the other hand, it has resulted in great majority remaining in class for almost a semester to complete the course. Hence balancing of teaching and facilitation has been identified as an area faculty needs to focus on and further improve.

The Foundations Math PD day will be held on Monday, 5th Jan 2015. Mr. Harold D. Baker, Director of Advanced Customer Solutions, ALEKS Corporation will be flown in by ALEKS and McGraw Hill to continue enhancing faculty knowledge, skills and mobile learning using ALEKS. In addition the following areas will be addressed during PD week:

  1. Efficient use of ALEKS report
  2. Identification, compilation and use of additional E-resources.
  3. Sharing of Innovative practices – Balance teaching/facilitation, LBD, Effective use of apps and other e-resources.

We look forward to the PD week to address these important issues.

Onward and upward!
