Sharjah Level 4 students tour heritage sites on the big red bus
Mairead Lyons-Hackett
Learning by Doing took on another dimension when Fnds Level 4 students learned more about Sharjah by doing the Red bus
tour.
This took place just before the National Day celebrations on Sunday, 30th November and Monday, 1st December. Approximately 160 students, armed with their iPads and accompanied by Level 4 teachers, left the Al Majaz waterfront area on 3 double decker buses which looked more like they belonged to the streets of London. The students were tasked with filming tourist spots around Sharjah as part of their second LBD project.
This particular project was the brainchild of Fnds teacher Jason Thompson, who linked it to National Day and the tourist hot spots of Sharjah. These included the Heritage Village (also known as the Heart of Sharjah,), the Blue or Central Souq, Qanat al Qasba, the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization and the Al Majaz waterfront itself. The last stop was also a favourite lunchtime venue with teachers and students.
Feedback from both was very positive. The students had the opportunity to learn more about the history and touristic spots of their city and to gather material for their projects. Since many of the staff live in Dubai, the tour was a good way to revisit venues they hadn’t seen for a number of years and to interact with their students. The students’ film projects will be presented in the next two weeks. We are all indebted to the organizational efforts of Jason, Rob Miles, Manar Abdalla and Luma Mohamed.
