Sharjah Higher Colleges Faculty get Sportive

May 28, 2014

Sport for staff and faculty is never halted for holidays or work overload: regardless of all obstacles, many of us make time to ensure our health and fitness are part of our daily routine.

Alyson Gibbons-Menzies has time to wave en route to a course record in the Sharjah University City Triathlon

In March the annual Sharjah University City Triathlon took place, and our staff did not disappoint, with several returning to the event and others entering for the first time. Among them were Foundations staff members Ian Delahunt, Daniel Millie, Richard Taylor and Alyson Gibbons-Menzies, with Alyson taking top spot in her age group as well as beating her own course record with a course time of 41m 51s.

Alyson Gibbons Menzies and Phil Haydon also achieved an astounding overall finishing position in the Dubai Mina Mile Open Water Swimming Series: each finished high in their age category and overall (out of 300 participants) to take special awards that will be received in a prize giving ceremony later this month in Dubai.

As well as competing themselves, many staff contribute to student competitions. Daniel Millie led his rowing team to 2nd place in the annual rowing race in Ras Al Khaimah. Alyson Gibbons Menzies was part of the coaching staff that took the SWC football team to a 2nd place victory at the annual indoor tournament at Abu Dhabi Khalifa City Campus. She also led the Foundations team to overall victory in the Directors Trophy

competition – inspiring her “Movement to Music” students by dancing as a Minion (perhaps one to ask her about!).

On the less competitive side, both SMC and SWC Foundation teachers lead students’ clubs, and SWC are lucky to have Louise Robertson and Mairead Lyons Hackett to lead the aerobics and fitness club, while Elena Danilina and Naeema Jin lead the Zumba. For SMC, Daniel Millie leads the swimming club, David May takes the circuit activities, Timothy Beer leads the indoor football and Richard Taylor leads the volleyball and basketball.

As the summer gets even hotter, remember water is an important aid! Carry a bottle of water with you to ensure you are always hydrated and to avoid those unnecessary headaches and feelings of fatigue. If you are having a workout, add a dash of flavored squash to your water to give yourself that extra electrolyte lift for a great workout!
