Protein Tips

More Protein

Often when it comes to building muscle many believe that protein is the way forward. However,  while this is true it’s not just about eating a 16oz steak every day. Protein is used to repair and build muscle that has been broken down by exercise (after all this is what exercise does to our muscles!) So how can this help build muscle?

First of all you need to reduce your fat %. Everybody (believe it or not!) has a 6 pack on their stomach, it’s just some hide it better than others. Start with a cardio programme 3-4 days every week, for 10 – 20 minutes, raising your heart rate to between 120 – 140bpm (you can check this on any cardio machine or purchase a heart rate monitor from any sports store).

Once your fat % is down start to think about the time you consume your protein. For optimal repair and growth you should look to consume a protein based food or drink either 30 minutes before exercise, during exercise, and/or within 30 minutes after exercising.

Protein can also be the answer to the problem of sleepy students or even sleepy teachers. A protein rich snack like beef jerky, nuts, peanut butter or an egg will keep you awake say experts, because contrary to popular belief protein stimulates the mind more than sugar.  Passing this message on to students might make afternoon classes a little more active and keep heads off desks.  A new study by the University of Cambridge has found that proteins help perk us up when our energy levels begin to dip.

So more protein in the right amounts and at the right time of day can help the body and mind.
