Actions Speak Louder With Words – TPR & English Foundations

March 10, 2014

Maria Brewster isn’t the only one that’s excited about the new structural project on campus at FWC. There’s a buzz circulating amongst Foundations members that our new building will be a venue accommodating numerous events and activities so that first-year students can apply their language knowledge outside the classroom walls and enjoy a well-earned break away from their I-pad screens.

Maria is a Foundations teacher who helped organize the first Fujairah Women’s Basketball team upon receiving an invitation to a tournament at Khalifa City campus.  The team consisted of mainly foundations students from level 3&4.  As an assistant coach, she felt that this physical activity became a huge stepping stone for students developing a more positive mental physical outlook on learning in the classroom. In addition to being a team player and coach, Ms. Brewster is very experienced in using the TPR technique in the classroom. Total Physical Response to this day influences both instructors and young learners throughout southern China where she taught for several years before joining our FWC team.

“Activities that incorporate TPR,” she states, “promote teamwork and respect. Students learn how to deal with both winning and losing, and have fun doing it.”  Alternative to classroom assignments, TPR can also motivate students, boost their self-confidence and personal physical awareness. She looks forward to having opportunities to assist  students enhance their skills through curriculum-based activities such as kickball, pilates, yoga and softball.  FWC foundations faculty are hoping not only have scheduled time in the new activity hall for sports, but embrace the welcoming venue for  creative team building activities  such as theatre and poetry-in-motion sessions.
