At the end of the day…it’s night.

At the end of the day…it’s night.

What a match! It’s end-to-end stuff, it’s a game of two halves, the pitch is a leveller, he has a cultured left foot – oh, yes, the English language! So goes the kind of cliché-filled banter that commentators, both professional or arm-chair bound, deliver within a usual 90-minute game. Sure you’ll agree that it would be highly unprofessional to repeat such morsels in a single game and bring shame on the family of an arm-chair correspondent, let alone 24-hour football extravaganza!

RAK 24-hour Football match

From left to right: Larry Jay, Michael Gallagher, Mark Regan and Jeff Kelleher

On 27th/28th February this patter was stretched in Ras Al Khaimah at the Charity 24-hour non-stop football match held at the RAK Academy. Six of us RKC Foundation teachers, Aaron Kingsley, Jeff Kelleher, Larry Jay, Mark Reagan, Michael Gallagher and Paul Harrison, took part in the event along with school teachers and sixth form students from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and other organisations. In total, there were 160 players taking part in the game.

We had the graveyard shift for this match from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m, and a second session in the afternoon from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. After our 5 hours of football, with the Terry Fox 5km charity run in between, you could say, we were ever so slightly knackered. The final score was RAK Academy 244 – 237 Away Side.

All match and social event proceeds will support the Alan Kerins’ African Projects (www.alankerinsprojects.org) in support of youth development in Zambia.
